TsAGI centenary in history: the Ilyushin Il-114
The Ilyushin Il-114 took its first flight in the end of March 1990. It is the Soviet and Russian twin-engine turboprop airliner, designed for local routes.

At the beginning of the 1980s the Ilyushin Design Bureau put forward an initiative proposal to develop a new aircraft for local airlines. The project was considered as a replacement for the outdated Antonov An-24. The initiative was supported and in 1986 the Council of Ministers of the USSR issued the regulation on the aircraft development.

In the subsequent period specialists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI) and the Design Bureau implemented on the Ilyushin Il-114 modern scientific and technical development of the time to achieve the desired aerodynamic quality.

One of the most important design decisions implemented at the aircraft was the high-aspect-ratio wing with new profiles. It was a result of the joint labour of the two organizations, based on extensive research and experimental works.

TsAGI’s specialists conducted studies to improve local aerodynamics, as well as upgrading the nacelles form and flap-rail fairings.

As a part of the project there was designed a unique large-scale model (1:2) with a wingspan of 15 m. It was equipped with the propulsion simulators with running propellers. In addition, there were simulated jet plumes. The tests were running in TsAGI’s large subsonic wind tunnel. As a result, specialists got the comprehensive information on the aircraft’s aerodynamics under conditions close to real, the loads on the controllers taking into account the slipstream effect, and icing characteristics.

Later, after the first flight and flight tests, the Il-114 was repeatedly demonstrated at international exhibitions in Le Bourget, Farnborough, Bangalore etc. However, due to lack of funds and the complex political situation in the country, the aircraft’s certification was delayed for several years. There were manufactured 18 aircraft all together.

The work is currently under way to modernize the aircraft and return it to serial production.

The Il-114-300 is the second generation of passenger aircraft for local airlines and the upgraded version of the Il-114.

There has been making preparations to organize the aircraft’s manufacturing in Russia. In 2020 the first Il-114-300 should get off the ground in Lukhovitsy near Moscow.
