TsAGI’s fundamental research in large transonic wind tunnel
Scientists of the Zhukovsky Central AeroHydrodynamic Institute (TsAGI, a member of the National Research Center “Zhukovsky Institute”) conduct basic research to improve the efficiency of the next generation commercial aircraft. The work is carried out within the framework of the State contract with the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation.

The Institute’s specialists designed and produced a large-scale straight-wing section model. It is a sharp supercritical-section wing that quite drastically changes the aerodynamic characteristics depending on the angle of attack and the Mach number. Eventually such airfoils will form the basis for the so-called adaptive wings of future aircraft.

Scientists complete TsAGI’s T-128 variable density wind tunnel tests now. The peculiarity of the experiment is its complexity with more than 10 kinds of measurements at the same time. The main objective of the research is the study of laminar-turbulent transition at high Reynolds numbers. In addition, scientists will estimate the dangerous phenomena — aerodynamic buffet at transonic regimes of flow. In future the proven measuring procedures will be applied at flight experiments.

“The large-scale model size and the large T-128 wind tunnel play an important role in these studies and allow testing at very large Reynolds numbers (up to 15 million),” commented the Deputy Chief of TsAGI’s Department of aerodynamics and aircraft missiles, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Vitaly Sudakov. “It is difficult to find analogues of such tests not only in Russian but also in the international practice.”
